5 Reasons to Upgrade your Garage Remote

5 Reasons to Upgrade your Garage Remote

Did you know that a garage door opens and closes an average of 1500 times a year?  That’s a lot of pressing on the remote for your garage!  Buttons wearing out is one reason to upgrade, but here are 5 more reasons to consider a new garage remote.

  1. Increased security

The garage has become more than just a place to store your car – it’s also where your old gear or out of season stuff goes.  The things stored in your garage worth a significant amount of money to potential thieves, and it can also be the doorway into the rest of your house.

Most thieves can easily and silently force open or disable the lock of an old garage door.  The more tech-friendly thieves can even hack your remote receiver using a special device.

  1. Minimise injury

Not everyone has mastered the art of tucking and rolling under the shutting garage door, but with an infrared sensor system as part of your garage door opener, there’s no chance the door will close on your tomb-raider-in-training.  The infrared system ensures that the door will go back up if an object or a person gets in the way, minimising the risk of injury to you and your family.

  1. Minimise noise

Trying to sneak in late at night so you don’t disturb the neighbours, or wake the kids?  All goes well until the chain drive on the garage door starts rattling away.

Most new garage openers are made to open the garage door with little to no noise.  You can upgrade to a more modern garage door opener that still uses the old chain drive but are designed to be much quieter than the older models, or a further upgrade to a belt drive system will be quieter yet again, making those late night trips easier on the ears.

  1. Emergency battery in case of power failure

When the lights flick off just before you start dinner because of a power failure, what else can you do but get take-out?  Or maybe someone tripped and hurt themselves in the dark, and you need to get them to a doctor.  Whatever the reason, your old garage door opener may not work during a blackout.

Upgrading to a new garage door opener ensures that you’ll still be able to open the garage even when the power isn’t on, due to their backup batteries, making that trip out a lot easier.

  1. Less moving parts

Sometimes, less is best.  Older garage door remotes work by sending a signal to the receiver to open the door, with both the remote and the receiver using a series of small switches for security.  However, if those switches are moved or manipulated by accident, it can cause a sizable inconvenience to your day.

Newer garage door remotes and receivers use facility code, or FC, which is a unique number that is integrated into both the receiver and the remote.  One of the great things about the FC technology is that there are less moving parts, which prevents an accidental change of code.
